Holy Spirit Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Church was dedicated
on June 15, 1969 under the Pastorate of Reverend Father
Lawrence Slavik. Its history had actually begun much earlier
when immigrants from Eastern Europe were attracted to and
settled in Cleveland, Ohio. The worship of Almighty God
according to their own traditions and customs lead them to
establishing their own Byzantine Rite Catholic Church. On
September 14, 1909, the first meeting to organize a new parish
was held and a month later, Holy Ghost Greek Catholic Church
was granted its charter by the State of Ohio. Property located
at West 14th street and Kenilworth, SW, was purchased and by
February of 1910, construction had begun on Holy Ghost Greek
Catholic Church. This was under the Pastorate of Very Reverend
Joseph Hanulya. Soon after, 31 acres of land in the suburb of
Parma was purchased to be used for a cemetery.
In May, 1965, it was realized that a new parish was needed,
due to a changing neighborhood, especially the disruption
caused by the construction of the Innerbelt Freeway of I-71
and I -80. Therefore, the most logical parcel of land to
relocate Holy Ghost Parish to would be the Eastern most parcel
of Holy Ghost Cemetery on West 54th Street in Parma, Ohio. On
Sunday, September 17, 1967, ground was broken for the new Holy
Spirit Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Church, Catechetical
Center and Social Hall.
In 1984, Reverend Father Donald Petyo, began a renovation
project to change the interior of the church into a more
traditional Byzantine Catholic Church. An Iconostasis was
installed and a new Chandelier. The Sanctuary was remodeled.
Since that time, many pastors have come and gone, each leaving
their own contributions to Holy Spirit parish family.
Presently, we are under the spiritual direction of our pastor,
Reverend Father James Batcha, a native Clevelander.
